Here are a few examples!

1. I was approached by Mary B. to make a jacket from a heavy piece of felt that her neighbor gave her. It was made in a class 30 years ago at a craft center and the teacher was Laine Goldsmith. Laine is one of the first felt teachers here in the USA. The piece was more of a wall hanging material and the wool was coarse not exactly for clothing. There was a different design on the fron and the back. I took the challenge and met with Mary deciding on the design for the jacket and I chose a pattern. I decreased the pattern form an extra small to an extra extra small since she is a size Two. I lined the jacket with some hand dyed silk I had and used felted prefelt for the sleeves and trim. Here is the result:

2. I wouldn't have been able to make Mary's coat if I hadn't spent several months working on the coat below. The body is needle felted BFL and Gotland cross (from Judy Colvin in Montana). I needle felted angora goat locks into it and then laid it on my rolling mat and placed a layer of white merino wool on top, then wet felted it. The sleeves are silk and wool felted then dyed charcoal. This coat was also lined and the buttons are raku from a local Taos artist. The edging is leather. Sherry pictured, purchased it at the Form and Fiber show in Santa Fe in August. She is modelling it in front of my booth at the Fall Fiber Fiesta in Santa Fe.

3. I attended a retreat in August in Cimarron NM with Susan Lazear (www.cochenille.com) to learn more about the garment designer software program. After purchasing the software in 2010 I finally feel confident using it. I designed a coat and made up the coat in alpaca and merino wool. I dislike making pockets and Susan suggested making detachable pockets. Below is the coat modelled by Cathy M. at my booth at the Taos Wool Festival. The collar edging is Elk hide.

4. I had several men ask if I made men's jackets at the Taos Wool Festival in October and I told them to come back next year because I am working on it. I used my Garment designer software and printed out mens patterns in sizes: 38 (which I found out is too small) 40 and 42. I started a jacket for Don (my husband) and then finished two in sizes 38 and 40. I brought the 38 and 40 to our guild meeting and the husband of our previous president tried it on and it fit great.
Below are pictured Virginia and Mike wearing the jacket at the Fall Fiber Fiesta in Santa Fe. It is grey alpaca and green merino wool inside. The sleeves are grey alpaca that I dyed with black walnut that I have had a long time so the color is more of a buckskin.
We are having below zero temperatures at night and several inches of snow which seems early for the year. My alpaca/ merino felt jacket received the second place for Garments at the Taos Wool Festival in October. I finished it 4 days before the show and neglected to take a picture of it. This was the first garment I made using alpaca fiber. I loved the feel of the alpaca wool blend felt and my second piece made with alpaca is shown in the last post. I have purchased some Huacaya/Suri blend roving from Ranchos de los Suenos which I have already needle felted into 5 mm habotai silk fabric along with a thin layer of merino wool roving. I will be wet felting it and look forward to the feel of the felt with this blend. The fiber is white so I will be dying the finished felt for a garment. Below is a picture of the beautiful New Mexico landscape showing fall colors, that I took about a month ago in Abiquiu, en route to Santa Fe.
I have a few pictures of some pieces. I made three jackets with set in sleeves, a short jacket that was made from a pattern I made off of a vintage piece that Colleen Alexander let me borrow, and several vests that I had made before but I changed the sides on two making a short lacing.
Below is the short jacket with a matching scarve: It is merino wool and spots of silk

The jackets:
Two are merino wool and Silk lap as the outside layer felted together. The Purple one is merino wool with 8 mm habotai silk fabric felted together. I cut them out, dye the pieces and sew them together.
It is almost a year since I have posted to my blog! I have been working on garments that are much more fun that accessories, but I do like to add accessories to match a garment to make a full outfit. This bolero started with silk fabric and merino wool roving. It was felted together and then I dyed the fabric in an orangey dye bath. Afterwards I clamped the fabric with the large black paper clips and over dyed in a red that I think was scarlet wash-fast dye. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend one of the "Design Outside the Lines" retreats with Marcy Tilton and Diane Erickson in Taos, New Mexico, September 2012. I knew about the juried art exhibit which is jointly sponsored by our weaving guild - Pikes Peak Weavers Guild of Colorado Springs and the Business of Art Center, Manitou Springs, Colorado. I had the bolero cut out and brought it to the retreat. There, I learned so much from the teachers, helpers and students. It was a totally new field for me to stencil and paint on the dyed felt. I just happened to have a black scarf that had been over dyed with red and it went with the bolero. I used some of Diane's stencils and stenciled and painted the scarf and bolero pieces and it was really fun to see the fabric come alive! I repeated the little triangle shaped stencil on the bolero and scarf to signify falling ashes which became the title of the piece. After stenciling I stitched dotted lines using black embroidery floss. I really loved the effect and this is the first "Red" piece I have made... And it was accepted into the exhibit! The opening reception is Friday June 21st from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. The exhibit will be at the BAC in Manitou Springs, Colorado June 21 - August 3, 2013

This is another full outfit, this time in blue/green color scheme. I call it "Peaceful Waters". It is made up of an eight point handkerchief skirt, an obi belt, bolero, scarf and hat. I dyed a purchased silk camisole top to go with it. It is all handmade felt and silk (fabric and natural silk fibers). The question I had was whether it looked better with or without the hat. It is amazing the difference that a hat makes! My most recent work is the lilac and magenta kimono style coat is constructed of handmade felt - studio dyed with some shibori pole-wrapping techniques.
The white alpaca fiber was first needle felted on the Table Top needle felting machine that can be seen at http://www.feltcrafts.com/. After needle felting I rolled the pieces - wet and soapy - on the rolling machine. Then they tumbled in the dryer - again wet and soapy. I had 7 pieces of felt and I dyed each a different color. Then I wrapped or otherwise folded the pieces to achieve different resist effects. They were then all dyed in the same dye bath - a brownish color.

The bag is lined and leather is sewn on one side of the strap.
The bag is currently on sale at the Tactile Arts Center in Denver Colorado at the 5th Annual "Member Showcase"
We had a quick trip to visit Susan and her husband Ron at Waldron Grove Alpacas in Illinois. She is doing some very exciting work on the table top needle felting machine. She is felting into all kinds of fabrics using alpaca and wool and also using her rolling machine combining with the needle felting machine.

I have a pile of needle felted romney wool - natural brown color - that I can picture to become a coat. It was made while testing finished machines waiting to be shipped out to their new owners. I want to wet felt onto the needle felted fiber and see the results of a twice felted piece. Today I finally had a chance to do some samples. First I laid out different colors of gauze fabric on top of the solar pool cover rolling mat. Then I cut pieces of hard felt - sometimes called "pebbles". The pebbles were placed on top of the gauze fabric. I used gauze because I want to see the effect of the pebbles and have them stand out. I covered the pebbles with two thin layers of merino wool, some matching the fabric and some in contrast. The needle felted romney in natural brown and natural grey was placed on top and everything was wet down with cold water and liquid Dawn - soap (from a watering can), then placed on the rolling machine. I didn't use pressure, I just let it turn on the bottom two rollers checking it every 3 to 5 minutes. After about 20 minutes everything was felting together so I used hot water with olive oil soap and flipped the piece over and now placed it on the machine with 3 turns of pressure. I left it for 5 minute intervals before rolling it in the opposite direction. Everything felted together after around 20 more minutes and I rolled by hand for about 5 minutes then let it tumble in the dryer wet and soapy for around 8 minutes total. I like the results and now I can plan the final fabric color and the merino wool color I will use.
The retreat focused on creative design for sewers and knitters. Anna Walden, a knitwear designer and Susan Lazear - Professer of Fashion at Mesa College in San Diego were the instructors. I took copious notes and many pictures and came away with a new appreciation and understanding, (though just scratching the surface), of garment design. We spent a day in the LA garment district and visited Beverly Hills - Rodeo Drive and a highlight was the "Il Teatro alla Moda" Theatre in Fashion, an exhibition of the theatrical costumes from Italy's world famous haute couture designers.
